Rocky man runs for Yellowhead Riding

A Rocky Mountain House man is seeking to become the Conservative Party of Canada nominee in the Yellowhead Riding.

Robert Duiker has been the principal of Rocky Christian School for 13 years, and has a history in politics.

“In the time that I’ve lived here I’ve first become the president of the progressive conservative party in our provincial riding,” says Duiker. “Then after that I became the first president of the United Conservative riding association after the two parties joined.”

Duiker says his main goals are to represent rural Alberta, and promote freedom of expression.

“Take hunting (for example), we’re the ones who have bears in our yard, we’re the ones who have guns in our houses and people in the city don’t seem to understand it but they’re the ones with the opinions,” says Duiker. “I’d like to help people in cities better understand exactly what rural life is like and how our positions are very reasonable and represent a lifestyle which we treasure.”

Duiker adds he’d like to promote a Conservative party that values the voice and opinion of everyone.

“Other people’s perspectives should be as important as mine, so I’m not selling a set of positions for people that are trying to find the candidate who’s the most identical to them, but somebody who is going to listen and cares about their view, whether or not it’s agreed with.

“I think that we have all kinds of issues on the table but we just don’t hear anybody,” says Duiker. “I think that our party and other parties often talk with our fingers in our ears and I would just like to contribute to getting that conversation going, regardless of what the topic is.”

The Electoral District of Yellowhead covers 76,127 square kilometers and has a population of more than 100,000 people. The district is currently being represented by Conservative MP Jim Eglinksi, who has announced he won’t be seeking re-election in 2019.
