RCMP renew search for wildfire spotter Stephanie Stewart who vanished near Hinton

A search is underway north of Hinton in connection with a nearly 12-year-old missing persons case. 

Stephanie Stewart, 70, was working at the Athabasca Fire Lookout Tower near Hinton when she was last heard from in August 2006. She was an employee of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and colleagues were worried when she didn’t call in on the morning of Aug. 26.

Her cabin was looked at, RCMP called in to investigate, and officers believed she had been murdered.

RCMP said on Thursday that a ground and water search is being done in the areas of the Athabasca Fire Tower, Jarvis Lake, and Highway 40 North in connection with the disappearance of Stewart. 

Multiple agencies are taking part in the search, including the RCMP Historical Homicide Unit, Alberta Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry and civilian search & rescue teams.

Mounties said the public may see an increased police presence in these areas, however there is no public safety risk and there are no restrictions to public activities in the area.

The search is expected to last until Friday.
