New artwork at Sylvan Lake pier to create ‘iconic’ photos

Aug 17, 2018 | 2:02 PM

A recently installed piece of public artwork will allow for Sylvan Lakers to create new memories.

A giant blue and yellow ‘SYLVAN LAKE’ sign now stands at the pier and Town officials are hoping it will be just a small part of a bigger focus on jumpstarting tourism.

“We’ve got an arts and culture master plan now and a renewed focus on tourism development, and we identified a need to create a gathering place to create those photos that you see in other destinations around the world,” says Joanne Gaudet, Communications Officer. “Even Red Deer has one now, but there’s also Cabo San Lucas, Amsterdam and Toronto. That was what created the idea and we have some really great local artists.”

The cost for the artwork was $18,000, which came out of the money the Town received from the provincial land transfer of Sylvan Lake Provincial Park.
