49 Ave repaving to cause downtown delays

Local motorists can expect to see significant construction along one of the city’s busiest roads in the coming weeks.

Officials say 49 Avenue in downtown Red Deer is about to be repaved, so drivers can expect delays while the work is being completed.

Repaving will take place from 43 Street to 55 Street and is part of The City’s Pavement Rehabilitation program.

Construction will be done in multiple steps in an effort to minimize traffic impacts with the project to get underway August 18 and 19 where lane closures will be in place from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. for milling. Two lanes of traffic however will remain open at all times.

On August 25 and 26, city officials say far east lanes will be closed from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. for additional milling to address excess damage.

From August 28 – 30, tentative lane closures are slated to be in place overnight during paving.

Drivers are reminded to slow down when passing through construction zones and obey all signs. Pedestrians meanwhile are reminded to cross the street only at designated crosswalks.

All road construction is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change.
