Axe-wielding thief smashes windows, torches shed in Ponoka

A young man faces several charges following a vandalism spree in Ponoka this week.

Mounties say several windows were smashed with an axe and a shed set on fire during a two-hour period in downtown Ponoka late Monday night (Aug. 13).

RCMP responded at about 11:10 p.m. to a number of calls reporting a male with an axe in the area of 58 Street and 53 Avenue. It was reported he was allegedly trying to break into houses, smashing windows in vehicles, and set a shed and fence on fire which both burnt to the ground.

Officers located and arrested a male without incident. Upon arrest the male was found in possession of two axes, one handsaw, and miscellaneous stolen items.

No one was injured during this incident.

Joseph Soosay, 19, was charged with two counts of mischief, one count of arson, two counts of attempted break and enter and breach of a recognizance.

Soosay was remanded in custody, and will appear in court in Ponoka provincial court on Friday.
