Celebrate Metis culture during Heritage Day at the MAG

Aug 6, 2018 | 6:00 AM

Red Deerians have the chance to celebrate and learn more about Metis culture in our area during a Heritage Day event at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) on Monday.

The August 6 event runs from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and will include bannock, a family friendly craft, games, tours of the current exhibit ‘The Writing on the Wall: Works of Dr. Joane Cardinal-Schubert RCA’, live fiddle music from Brianna Lizotte and jigging lessons.

Kim Verrier, Coordinator of Visitor Experience at the MAG, hopes people take away a greater understanding of Metis culture.

“Metis were here prior to European settlement in this area, along with the First Nations,” says Verrier. “So it’s great just to be able to highlight different cultures that were in our region and we’re hoping that people on Heritage Day have the opportunity to experience a little bit of the Metis culture. We also have our school house in Heritage Square which is right next to the museum, so we’re doing school house tours as well that day.”

“The MAG’s Heritage Day celebrations give us the opportunity to explore the amazing history and diversity of Red Deer and central Alberta,” adds Lorna Johnson, Executive Director, in a press release. “It is a great opportunity to say ‘welcome’ to all of the newcomers who have recently made Red Deer their home. We will be delighted to tell you about all of the activities that we have planned for the year ahead.”

Admission to the event is free but donations are gratefully accepted.

The MAG is located at 4525 47A Avenue in Red Deer in between the Golden Circle – Senior Resource Centre and Recreation Centre downtown.
