EDMONTON- Red Deer Airport is getting nearly a quarter million dollars to purchase a new piece of runway equipment.

The airport is getting $271,450 to replace a wheeled loader which is used for pulling snow removal or de-icing equipment.

The funding comes from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program.

Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources announced Monday that the Government of Canada is investing in safety improvements at three Alberta airports.

The High Level Airport is receiving $5,714,821 for runway and taxiway upgrades. The Lethbridge Airport will use $98,000 to purchase a de-icer which is used in combination with other snow removal equipment to apply sand to runways, taxiways and aprons to clear snow, and melt ice.

Sohi says these airports provide essential air services including community resupply, air ambulance, search and rescue and forest fire response.

“The Red Deer, High Level, and Lethbridge airports are important hubs for residents and businesses in their regions,” says Sohi. “This investment will help ensure continued safe operations for passengers, flight crews, and employees, who rely on these airports to support the regional economy and its social development.”
