Over 21,000 attend day four of Westerner Days

The warm temperatures and sunshine in Red Deer brought the community together for the fourth day of Westerner Days Fair & Exposition on Saturday, with 21,047 guests passing through the gates, down from 22,467 on day four last year. 

Westerner Park officials say a big hit of the day however was spotting Cirque Zuma Zuma at the amphitheatre. The Exhilarating African Cirque Style Entertainment, sponsored by 106.7 The Drive, had guests gasping as they performed their acrobatics. Attendees also enjoyed Walkin’ On Sunshine, Alecia Aichelle and Dean Ray who entertained the crowds at the Bud Barn & Beer Gardens on the Chillabong’s Stage.

The Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships was also on its final qualifying day, with attendees admiring the beautiful animals in the warm summer weather. Dale Young, sponsored by the Calgary Flames Ambassadors, finish first with a time of 76.23 seconds. John Stott, sponsored by Go Uncle Ben’s RV, came in second place with a time of 76.25, while Neil Salmond, sponsored by ABC Restaurant, came in third at 76.58 seconds. 

Average times for this year’s Westerner Days chuckwagon races still has Reed Rosencrans, sponsored by The Pipe Yard, in the lead with 311.42 seconds. John Stott, sponsored by Go Uncle Ben’s RV, is currently in second place with 312.10 seconds, while Jack Stott, sponsored by The Home Place, holds third place with a time of 313.31. Finals will take place Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Saturday night at the TD Main Stage featured Dear Rouge, Virginia to Vegas and The Randi Boulton Band, with over 2,200 guests enjoying some fantastic music before the fireworks.

The chariot races had its second day on Saturday, before the Sunday finals which take place at 1:00 p.m. Marty Maxwell, sponsored by Prairie Water & Equipment Rentals, took home first place with his 75.67 seconds, with Adam Waldner, sponsored by Caltech Diesel Inc., was right behind in second place with a time of 75.81. Bob Leach, sponsored by Ironstone Services, Ohaton, was in third place with his time of 75.93.

On the final day of this year’s Westerner Days, it’s Servus Credit Union Family Day. Admission and parking is $35 for a carload of up to six people, while kids twelve and under can ride all day for $15.
