Green Cart survey to begin this week

Jul 16, 2018 | 11:05 AM

The City of Red Deer will begin a four-week long survey this week looking into how residents are using their recently acquired Green Carts.

Green Cart pick-up began in April and since then, city officials say the amount of garbage collected from households has been substantially reduced.

This means city crews may be peeking into your Green Cart to see what you’re putting in yours, with staff intending to catch people doing the right things or correcting others for any placement or content errors.

“Now that residents have been using Green Carts for a few months, we decided to hit the streets and give out gold stars to households who are doing everything right,” says Janet Whitesell, Waste Management Superintendent, in a press release. “We will also take the opportunity to provide feedback and education to households that might still be working though the learning curve on using their cart.”

As city staff collect Green Cart data from about 10 per cent of Red Deer households during the survey, residents are encouraged to ask questions of staff if they happen to see them checking out their compost bins.

“We want to ensure residents have everything they need to successfully use their Green Cart,” adds Whitesell. “We are very impressed with how households have embraced the Green Cart so far this year, and are excited to continue supporting households who are still working to come on board.”

City officials say diverting compostable waste into the Green Cart reduces the amount of garbage disposed of in the landfill, and works toward the next phase of the City’s program: Blue Carts in replacement of the current blue box program and Black Carts for remaining garbage.

The next phase of the City’s cart program is expected to roll out in the spring of 2019.
