Design work to begin on future sports park in Sylvan Lake

Jul 15, 2018 | 10:33 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has taken its first step in the development of a future sports park.

On July 11, Town Council and staff hosted local sport user groups during a Pogadl Park design discussion.

Consultants will now get to work developing three park design concepts, based on the input from Wednesday night’s session, and utilizing existing Town documents such as the Recreation, Parks and Open Space Master Plan, Festival and Events Strategy, and Cultural Master Plan.

More opportunities for the public to provide input are planned for the near future.

“We’re excited to start collaborating with Sylvan Lakers – hearing their ideas, and learning about their priorities in terms of our community’s next major public recreational space,” says Sean McIntyre, Mayor, Town of Sylvan Lake, in a press release. “The more we work together, the better we can ensure our public spaces meets both our existing and future needs.”

In 2016, town offcials say members of the Pogadl family generously donated 20 acres of land to the Town of Sylvan Lake for a future sports park.

In memory of Ed and Glenda Pogadl, the Town is proceeding with preliminary plans for an 80 acre park that could, in the future, include soccer fields, baseball diamonds, multi-use turf, volleyball courts, basketball surface, green space, and/ or even a cricket pitch.

A finalized design for the park is expected in September.

The Pogadl Park property sits on the south side of Sylvan Lake – west of 60 Street.
