New playground equipment planned for Ponoka this summer

Jul 14, 2018 | 1:22 PM

Kids in Ponoka will be happy to learn that a new playground will soon be installed in Westview Park, while a new swing set will be installed at Central Park this summer.

“The equipment has been ordered and we’re hoping to have installation completed by mid-to-late August,” says Wes Amendt, Director of Community Services for the Town of Ponoka, in a press release. “The new Westview Park playground will feature multiple slides, swings, climbing apparatus, playhouse structures and other fun features. The new swing set in Central Park will feature two new belt swings and two kiddie swings.”

Once the playground equipment is installed by the contractor, officials say the Town will invite community volunteers to help install play surfaces for the new playground equipment in both parks.

“The play surfaces will consist of an engineered wood fibre that is durable and won’t harm mowers if some ends up on the grass beside the playgrounds,” says Amendt.

Installation of the playground equipment by the contractor is expected to take about ten days, weather depending.

“That means we will likely need volunteers to help install the play surfaces around mid-August,” says Amendt. “We’re targeting a tentative date of August 11 but we will keep volunteers informed of any changes to that timeline.”

Installation of the play surfaces however is expected to take one day with Lunch to be provided to the volunteers who are encouraged to bring wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes, and also to wear comfortable work attire that includes work gloves and close-toed shoes.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Andrew Jones at 403-783-0136.

The new playground equipment will replace old equipment that has been removed from both parks.

The Westview Park playground is located at 51 Avenue Close in Ponoka while the Central Park Playground is located at 52 Street and 54 Avenue.
