Drayton Valley woman reunited with lost cat 7 years after she went missing

A Drayton Valley woman got the opportunity this weekend to say hello and goodbye to a pet she thought she would never hear meow again.

Meg Chateauvert was reunited with her pet cat on Saturday after it went missing over seven years ago.

Chateauvert found out her cat was alive but in extremely poor shape after seeing a post by For All Animals Rescue Society (FAARS) on Facebook.

“It was insane. It was an absolute emotional roller coaster. I didn’t really have words, it was a whole crazy day with crazy emotions.”

The founder of FAARS, Crystal Gray, said she received a call about a cat being found at Country Style Trailer Court Saturday morning and was in need of veterinary help.

Gray took the cat home and threw up a post on Facebook with photos of the cat and what they thought the tattoo read. That post caught the attention of Chateauvert.

After correctly identified the ear tattoo of the cat in the photo and sending pictures to Gray, it was without a doubt Chateauvert’s brown tabby cat Tuffi, who had went missing seven years ago.

“I’ve only witnessed things like this once in a story on TV, it’s amazing,” said Gray.

The two women met up at a veterinary clinic, where Chateauvert and Tuffi were reunited. Gray says that the reunification was incredible to see.

“She didn’t lift her head the whole drive to meet Meg, but when she saw her Tuffi literally lifted her head and looked at Meg and I just started to cry. I couldn’t believe it, even with the cloudiness in Tuffi’s eyes she knew.”

Sadly after being examined by the vet it was determined that there wasn’t much to do to save Tuffi’s life. She was 18-years-old, her kidneys were failing and she was very emaciated.

That’s when Chateauvert decided to take Tuffi home to say her goodbyes.

“It was extremely important for us to be able to say goodbye. She meant a lot to us, we had her for 11 years prior to her disappearing so it was crazy.”

Tuffi passed away in Chateauvert’s arms following family coming over and seeing her one last time.

She says she’ll never really know how Tuffi wandered 30 kilometres away from home to the point where she was found, but hopes her story will provide solace for others with lost pets.
