Driver killed in crash while fleeing police

Jun 29, 2018 | 2:36 PM

A man who was fleeing police on Friday afternoon died after crashing into another vehicle.

Red Deer RCMP say the incident began around 11:30 a.m. when they responded to a report of an erratic driver in a parking lot on Gaetz Avenue on the north end of the city.

When Mounties executed a traffic stop, the suspect vehicle, a Dodge Nitre, stopped at first before fleeing once the officer had exited their vehicle. Police did not pursue the vehicle for public safety reasons, but located it again in an alley in north Red Deer shortly thereafter.

It then fled from police again. Not long after, it collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Taylor Drive and 60 Street/Oleander Drive. It then collided with a tree about 100 metres down 60 Street.
