Drayton Valley bylaw would ban cannabis consumption in public places

Jun 29, 2018 | 10:40 AM

The first steps towards recreational cannabis legislation in Drayton Valley took place at Town Council on Thursday, with the notion of banning the consumption of cannabis in public places.

Council spent the afternoon directing town administration on the preparation of bylaws concerning the consumption and sale of cannabis in Drayton Valley.

Council voted in favour of prohibiting public consumption of cannabis within the Town of Drayton Valley, including consumption at festivals or events. That decision is in spite of the 60 per cent of cannabis survey respondents that agreed that marijuana should be allowed in designated areas at festivals or events.

The City of Calgary and the Towns of Sylvan Lake and Cold Lake are currently the only other Alberta municipalities that plans to impose a complete ban on the consumption of cannabis in public places.

When it comes to cannabis retail store setbacks, council decided on a 150 metres setback for a store in proximity to a school, playground or sports field. A 100 metre setback will be in place surrounding the Drayton Valley Hospital.

For those looking to run to the pot shop once it’s legalized, the maximum operating hours of a cannabis retail store will be set from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

An amendment to Land Use Bylaw 2007/24/D to include cannabis issues will be prepared and brought to council for first reading in August.
