NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. proposes a pipeline expansion through Clearwater County

NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, has proposed an extensive expansion to a natural gas pipeline that runs through Western Alberta.

In total, the company has proposed 344 kilometers of 48 inch pipe, including 50 kilometers in Clearwater County.

“These various pipeline sections within the study area would be located starting in the County of Grande Prairie, extending through the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16, Yellowhead County, and ending in Clearwater County,” TransCanada said in a release.

The addition would also include a compressor station in Nordegg, which according to TransCanada would create opportunities in the local community.

“Pipeline construction will result in tax payments to municipal, provincial and federal governments,” the release added. “When the pipeline is operational, annual tax payments will help support schools and hospitals, emergency services, recreation facilities, recycling programs and other local programs vital to sustaining communities.”

TransCanada says construction will require multiple jobs to be filled, and create demand for local goods and services.

Preparation for the project began in 2017, consulting with stakeholders, landowners and Aboriginal groups on certain components.

If all goes according to schedule, the construction on the project will begin in 2020 and have the pipeline in operation by 2021.
