North end house fire deemed suspicious

RCMP are now handling the investigation into a house fire in north Red Deer over the weekend after fire investigators deemed it to be suspicious in nature.

The fire at the 5300 Block of 76 Street broke out just after 2 a.m. Sunday and resulted in about $250,000 in damage to the one-and-a-half storey house. The fire was called in by a neighbour as no one was home at the time.

Tim Kivell, assistant fire marshal with Red Deer Emergency Services, said the fire started in the main floor washroom of the home, but burned through the roof. He says the home will likely be demolished.

Meantime, it’s unlikely that investigators will be able to pinpoint the cause of a fire late Saturday night involving a parked street sweeper.

The fire broke out just before 11 p.m. with witnesses saying they heard an explosion at around that time.

The privately-owned street sweeper was parked at a business at 7860 49 Avenue.

Kivell says there is too much damage to the cab and engine of the machine to determine was caused it to go up in flames.
