Save-On-Foods shares it forward for local food banks

The Red Deer Food Bank can now stock its shelves thanks to a donation from the two Red Deer Save-On-Foods locations.

From June 15-17, Save-On stores across western Canada committed to “Sharing it Forward,” which meant donating 25 per cent of all sales of Western Family products to local food banks.

On Friday, store staff presented a cheque to the Red Deer Food Bank for $3100.

“We always like to give back and the food bank is a tremendous ambassador for folks who are having a hard time,” says Red Deer North Store Manager Ernie Cordonier. “This is an opportunity as a food store to continue to give back to the community where we earn our living.”

Cordonier shared that the food bank actually benefits from the two stores daily as they pass along slightly blemished foods or other products that can’t be sold.

Alice Kolisnyk, Deputy Director with the Red Deer Food Bank, says with their buying power, that $3100 will actually translate into about eight-times as much worth of groceries.

“It means so much to the food bank, especially at this time of year when donations are typically low,” she says. “This will fill those cupboards up so clients have plenty of food to eat. We’ve always had a great relationship with Save-On-Foods and this just tops it up.”

Save-On-Foods, a division of The Jim Pattison Group, donated a total of $250,000 to food banks across western Canada through the “Sharing it Forward” campaign.
