South Red Deer school puts up new playground

Jun 22, 2018 | 10:37 AM

Students at St. Elizabeth Seton School in Anders can finally go back to playing on their own playground.

Two years ago, the school’s older playground had to be removed so portables could be installed. Ever since, the nearly 400 students have been using the nearby community playground, which isn’t necessarily built for that amount of use.

After raising more than $120,000 through in and out of school fundraisers, and receiving a number of grants, a brand new playground should be installed by end of day Friday.

“Playground structures encourage risk-taking behaviours,” says Carrie Keylock, a parent on the playground committee. “It is harder when you don’t have actual playground equipment for them to play on or you’ve got to bring out equipment all the time.  The kids did well for two years without much of a structure.
