Jun 21, 2018 | 5:41 PM

Prospective retailers of cannabis will soon be able to submit a deveopment permit application to The City of Red Deer.

Applications can be submitted starting Wednesday, July 11 at 8 a.m.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and must include a completed form, letter of intent, and proof of eligibility from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

A development permit and business licence must be obtained from The City before opening for business and of course retailers must wait until cannabis is legalized on October 17, 2018.

“The City of Red Deer carefully considered the federal and provincial recommendations, as well as the community’s contributions, as we developed the Land Use Bylaw. We are now ready to begin accepting development permit applications for cannabis retail stores that meet the requirements of this bylaw,” says Erin Stuart, Inspections & Licensing Manager.

The City bylaw which guides where retail cannabis locations may exist was approved by city council on May 14, after first reading on March 5 and a public hearing on April 18. An online survey responded to by 1,474 people was also conducted.

Administration has been directed to bring a report back to city council 14 months following the official date of legalization.
