True-Line Homes strikes it big for Boys and Girls Club

A highly successful slo-pitch tournament held in Blackfalds is putting more than $14,000 in the pockets of Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer.

True-Line Homes has hosted the tournament for the last decade, giving $52,000 to Boys and Girls Club over the last seven. On Wednesday, they presented a cheque to the club and Youth HQ.

“We always want to encourage youth to get out there and be active and be comfortable with themselves,” says Derek Fredeen, True-Line site supervisor. “The Boys and Girls Club allows them to do that. Supporting programming financially is huge and we see high value in keeping that going in our community.”

Kris Fleckenstein, chair of the board of directors at Youth HQ, says the money will impact the lives of around 1500 kids.

“Our Boys and Girls Club numbers are now over 1000 and that’s outside of Camp Alexo,” he says. “Our programs don’t run without funding, and the other component of it that should be underscored is the awareness and what these community events do for our programs and Youth HQ. It’s such a huge load off of us because every time there are these events, it attracts more volunteers, participants, mentors and money to our organization.”

True-Line also announced they are handing off control of the ball tourney to the Red Deer Kinsmen, who plan on keeping the beneficiary Boys and Girls Club.

Fredeen says True-Line, which has been supporting Boys and Girls Club for multiple decades, will be looking at a new fundraising endeavour to support the causes closest to them.
