Rocky town council considers name addition to 49 Street

Jun 20, 2018 | 9:19 AM

Rocky Mountain House town council is taking the next step towards renaming a street after one of the area’s most revered war veterans.

They are proposing to change the name of 49 Street to honour R.L Zengel.

The Victoria Cross Foundation submitted the street name request to council on May 31 in honour of Raphael Louis Zengel who served in World War I and received a Victoria Cross medal.

The town’s local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was named after Mr. Zengel, and he donated his Victoria Cross medal to the Legion.

Mr. Zengel earned his Victoria Cross on September 27, 1918, and the foundation plans on celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the occasion on August 11, coinciding with the street name change.

However, the Town is required to notify all of the building owners along 49 Street, giving them an opportunity to speak up if they have any issues with the change.

Notices will now be sent out, and any responses will be presented to town council on July 17.

If the process goes smoothly, new signs should be installed in time for the celebration in August.
