Demolition of Evergreen Elementary School to start next month

After standing in Drayton Valley for over half a century, demolition work at Evergreen Elementary School will get underway next month.

 Wild Rose School Division Superintendent Brad Volkman says the school is scheduled to start being torn down on July 3. 

The kindergarten to grade six school was originally in store for a modernization, but an inspection done by Alberta Education last summer found conditions in the school were worse than anticipated. A new school was announced at the end of October 2017.

Volkman added “WRSD is very excited to be building a brand new Evergreen Elementary school in Drayton Valley with a modern and exciting design that supports 21st century learning.”

Evergreen was first constructed in 1962, with expansions to the building be done in 1963 and again in 1986. Two connecting links and modular classrooms were also added on to the school throughout its lifespan.

The new school is slated to be opened by January 2021, with a capacity of 250 students. That figure can be ballooned to 450 with modular classrooms being added to the building when needed.
