Preliminary hearing for Stettler homicide booked for Red Deer

Jun 15, 2018 | 9:55 AM

A preliminary hearing for a Stettler man charged with second-degree murder will take place in Red Deer next year.

John Savage, 51, is charged in the death of James Hulkevich, 71, on the evening of April 6.

Savage appeared in Stettler provincial court this week via CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre, where he is being held in a protective custody unit.

Savage escaped from Stettler hospital before allegedly killing Hulkevich and stealing his truck. He’d been arrested in the early morning hours of April 6 following a report of a suicidal man with a machete, and was being watched by hospital security prior to his escape.
