First annual Rocky Learning Expo a huge success

Jun 15, 2018 | 9:49 AM

The first annual Rocky Learning Centre Learning Expo brought in people of all types on Thursday, while raising awareness on the centre’s resources.

“One of our representatives said we’re the best kept secrets in Rocky,” says Mona Crocker, Executive Director for the Rocky Learning Centre. “Hopefully, that secret gets out.”

The expo featured 13 booths with local representatives from post-secondary institutions including Athabasca University, SAIT and Olds College. Local organizations also promoted their programs, including the Rocky Native Friendship Centre promoting youth programs.

Crocker says the expo attracted more than 50 people, including a younger crowd.

“We certainly had a few recent graduates from high school looking at some programs,” says Crocker. “We also had some grade 11 students come in, interested in the next cohort of the practical nurse program with Red Deer College.”

Although representation from post-secondary institutions was high, some weren’t able to make it to the expo. However, Crocker says they’ll have another opportunity to attend.

“We’ll definitely have it again next year, I’ve certainly heard from some of the presenters that they’d love to come every month if they could.”

The centre will be fine-tuning some aspects of the event moving forward.

“I think what we need to do next year is look at making our dates a little earlier, perhaps at the end of May,” says Crocker. “Just to get more of an interest from the high schools, I think most of the kids are schooled out right now.”
