Search and Rescue wraps up spring conference in Nordegg

Jun 12, 2018 | 10:05 PM

Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue concluded the 2018 Mountain Rescue Association Spring conference on Sunday.

The Mountain Rescue Association is made up of teams from around the world who cover everything from mountain rescues to ground searches.

The Nordegg Goldeye Centre hosted search and rescue teams from around the world during the five-day event.

President of the Rocky Search and Rescue Edward Van Heeran says the association wanted to go back to it’s roots when choosing the venue.

“We wanted to host it in the mountains,” says Van Heeran. “It’s often hosted in urban centre’s or in a city setting so we wanted to get back to the basics.”

Wednesday consisted of opening ceremonies, while Thursday hosted workshops on topics such as helicopter safety and wilderness survival. Saturday had several demonstrations for rescue techniques, and a tradeshow with exhibitors from all over Canada, displaying different rescue equipment.

Van Heeran says the Rocky Search and Rescue team is the only one in Alberta, which is fitting because of the vast amount of outdoor activities.

“The Nordegg area is definitely a very common place for people to come climbing and hiking and that sort of thing,” says Van Heeran. “So it’s definitely a hub for search and rescue.”

This is the first time the conference has been hosted in Canada in 18 years.
