City council gives first reading to site exception for new microbrewery

Red Deer could soon be home to another microbrewery.

City council was unanimous in giving first reading on Monday to a zoning exception that would allow the Sawback Brewing Company to set up shop in Units 1-2, 7023 Johnstone Drive in Golden West Industrial Park.

Sawback currently has a development permit for the manufacturing, processing and distribution of beer and wants to also allow for the purchase and consumption of its craft beer at an on-site tasting room. Currently, they are only permitted to give small free samples to customers.

The location on Johnstone Drive is currently zoned as I-1 Industrial, which does not allow for a microbrewery, hence the need for a site exception.

City council received two letters in regards to the Sawback application – one in support and one against.

A public hearing is scheduled for July 9.

Red Deer is currently home to three existing microbreweries – Drummond Brewing, Troubled Monk Brewery and Belly Hop Brewing.
