Some of Red Deer’s finest citizens were honoured Thursday night during the annual Mayor’s Recognition Awards.

There were two winners this year of the Mayor’s Special Award — the highest recognition given by The City of Red Deer.

Recipients of that award are the Red Deer Royals who will soon celebrate their 50th anniversary. They were given the award for their volunteerism, contributions to the community, and the exceptional achievement of winning a gold medal at the 2017 World Music Contest in the Netherlands.

Dayle Clampitt was also honoured for her act of heroism and bravery in rescuing a group of lost Boy Scouts from the Scottish mountainside.

“The Mayor’s Recognition Awards are just one opportunity we have each year to acknowledge the citizens who contribute their skills, knowledge and talents to strive for excellence, demonstrate leadership and build our community,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “On behalf of city council and all Red Deerians, it is a privilege to honour those who have made, and continue to make, Red Deer proud.”

In athletics, four teams received an award, including the Red Deer College Kings volleyball team and Queens curling team, as well as the Notre Dame Bantam Cougars football team and the 2017 Sutter Fund Chiefs Midget female hockey team.

Individuals and groups to receive to the Community Builder award include Dr. Bill Stuebing, Ross Towers, William Heinsen, Janice Gerdts, Shawn Moore, Haylen Astalos, and the Red Deer Hospice Society.

Additionally, the Books on the Bus COSMOS Volunteer Team, the Aspelund Lodge Sons of Norway #571 and 15 other individuals were given Distinguished Voluntary Service awards.

An award for excellence in Fine and Performing Arts was given to Izél Pienaar.
