Red Deer Legion downsizing, staying put following building sale

Jun 4, 2018 | 4:40 PM

The arduous process of selling their current home is nearly complete for the Red Deer Legion Branch 35.

The sale of their building on Bremner Avenue has been in the works for over two years. Once the deal is finalized, the Legion won’t actually be moving from its 35-year home and will instead rent out a smaller portion of it from the new owner.

Legion President Bev Hanes says she is relieved.

“We had 89 members at our meeting and on the resolution to go to a 10-year lease, there was 83 for and just six against, so pretty resounding acceptance,” she says.

In recent weeks, the Legion was forced to get rid of thousands of items that were in storage space they won’t have once the sale is complete. Many of those items were taken by the Cormack Armoury, including a pair of the monuments which have sat outside the Legion for some time.

A garage sale will be happening in the next few weeks, sometime after the Molly B’s Lounge shuts down for good on the weekend of June 16.

Once the t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted later this week, the Legion will take up about 11,000 sq.ft. of the approximately 30,000 sq.ft. building.

“Everybody’s getting quite stressed out. We’re taking a lot of things down off our walls,” Hanes adds. “We’re just going to make this our home and make the best of it.”
