Jun 3, 2018 | 9:08 AM

A pair of cowboys from central Alberta competed hard at this weekend’s Grande Prairie Stompede Chuckwagon Championships.

Codey McCurrach from Eckville in his Brown’s Socialhouse sponsored wagon ran a time of 1:18:88 on Day 5 Sunday, placing 11th overall for the day.

While Bob Van Eaton from Clive in his iRecover Treatment Centres sponsored wagon ran a time of 1:20:04 to place 20th overall on day five of competition.

However, in what was described as truly an exciting chuckwagon race, Evan Salmond – driving the Debolt Contracting Outfit, and along with outriders Dayton Sutherland and Ethan Motowylo, captured the first show of the 2018 WPCA race season.

Coming off of barrel position number 3 in the sudden death final, Salmond captured the Grande Prairie crown with a penalty free run of 1:17:83.

Chad Harden from barrel position number 2 placed second in the heat, 1.66 second behind the winner Salmond.

Kurt Bensmiller crossed the finish line in second place but penalties pushed him back into third place from barrel position number 4, followed by Kirk Sutherland, who crossed the finish line in third place, but penalties bumped him back into fourth place in the heat from barrel number 1.

The WPCA Pro Tour will now move on to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the running of the Saskatoon World Chuckwagon Races presented by Dakota Dunes Casino starting on Thursday, June 7 and running through to Sunday, June 10, 2018.
