Bentley protests loss of mail services

May 28, 2018 | 6:39 AM

BENTLEY – The Town of Bentley held a public rally in support of the town’s post office on Monday.

Parcel mail service is being removed from the town and there will be a complete shut down of retail service as of June 1.

The rally began at noon at the Bentley post office on main street.

In a statement late Monday, Red Deer-Lacombe MP Blaine Calkins called the situation ‘terrible.’

“The residents of Bentley were given very little notice of this change in service and have had no opportunity to fully explore other possible options to retain retail postal services,” he said. “Asking residents to drive 50km to pick up or drop off parcels is ludicrous and violates and Canadian Postal Service Charter. We have seniors in Bentley who either don’t drive or are on a fixed income, it is unreasonable to make this request of them.”

Calkins added that he has written to the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Carla Qualtrough.

Meanwhile, members of the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association were also in attendance at the rally to show their support for a full return of postal service to the town.
