Alberta Party, NDP name candidates for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake by-election

Two more parties are set to announce their candidates for the upcoming Innisfail-Sylvan Lake provincial by-election.

The Alberta Party is holding an fundraising event tonight at which Abigail Douglass will be confirmed as their candidate.

Douglass’s family has deep roots in the riding, the party says, and helped pioneer the Innisfail and Penhold areas. She is a communications professional and former student president at The King’s University in Edmonton.

“We couldn’t be prouder to have Abigail on our team,” said Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel. “Abigail is an ideal candidate for the Alberta Party: hard-working, great with people and passionate about public service and building a stronger Alberta.”

“We live in one of the youngest ridings in Alberta, in one of the youngest provinces in Canada — we can and must do better, and I want to be that person who helps bring change to Innisfail-Sylvan Lake and the rest of Alberta,” explained Douglass, who feels residents in the riding are deeply concerned about the province’s economic recovery and finding ways to diversify the local economy, such as growing the agri-food and agri-tourism sectors. Rural crime and access to health services and long-term care also top the list of concerns.

The NDP is holding its nomination meeting Friday at the Sylvan Lake Library where they are to announce Nicole Mooney as their candidate for the by-election.

Mooney is an English teacher at St. Joseph High School in Red Deer and the Communications and Political Engagement Officers with Alberta Teachers’ Association Local 80.

Devin Dreeshen won the UCP nomination for the by-election earlier this month. Randy Thorsteinson is representing the Reform Party.

A date for the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake by-election has yet to be announced, but it must take place by August 5, 2018.

The by-election was made necessary by the resignation of Don MacIntyre in February.
