Rocky Mountain House Town Council considers a folk festival

May 17, 2018 | 3:54 PM

Rocky Mountain House Town Council explored the idea of hosting a folk music festival during Tuesday’s council meeting.

The Bear Creek Folk Festival production team, Sarah Card and Gordie Haakstad, presented to council, saying a music festival is one of the most economically beneficial events a municipality can host.

One of the main festivals they organize is based out of Grande Prairie, which more than 4500 people attend, roughly half from outside the region.

Card and Haakstad say the festival brings in roughly $1,000,000 in tourism dollars.
Councillor Merrin Fraser says a folk festival would definitely suit a town like Rocky Mountain House.

“I think Rocky Mountain House is culturally very supportive of the music industry,” says Fraser. “We’ve got lots of great local artists and lots of support from the community for music. So, I think it would be a great way to share our love of music with people coming from all over west Canada.”

If Council decides to pursue a festival, it would likely happen in 2020.
