Council approves parking penalties increases, effective July 1

May 15, 2018 | 9:41 AM

Penalties related to parking infractions are going up on July 1 in Red Deer.

City council finalized the increases Monday night. They originally granted approval to them during Operating Budget in January, but had to come back and amend the Traffic Bylaw.

Regular parking fines will go from $55 to $65. The early payment incentive remains at $35, thus the early payment will go from $20 to $30.

Council also agreed to amend the proposed increase for penalties related to parking where one should not during street cleaning or snow removal. It was proposed to boost the $85 fine to $100.

Instead, council voted to decrease the fee to $65. The change will result in approximately $64,000 in lost revenue.

In the meantime, Inspections and Licensing Manager Erin Stuart noted that there will be a review of the entire snow and ice policy in the near future.

Additionally, council voted against Lawrence Lee’s proposal to increase the fine of $100 for not stopping for a peace officer to $500.

Otherwise, all other parking penalties went up 20 per cent.

As previously reported and approved during Operating Budget, parking rates will also go up on July 1 by 25 per cent, or about an extra quarter per hour. Maximum rates in certain areas will be $2/hour.
