EDMONTON- A massive firefighting effort was launched on the weekend to battle wildfires in two areas north and northeast of Edmonton.

The blazes, in Westlock County and one on either side of Bruderheim, started Saturday afternoon.

A number of homes were evacuated near Bruderheim while other property owners were placed on alert.

The Westlock fire burned east of the hamlet of Vimy and sparked an evacuation alert for a number of families, but no structures were lost.
