The Drayton Valley RCMP detachment continued to deal with a spike in property crimes in April, according to newly released statistics.

Theft under $5,000, assaults and break and enters continued their trend of increasing last month, with 35 reports of theft under $5,000, 14 reports of break and enters and 14 reported assaults.

So far in 2018 there have been 79 reported break and enters, 44 thefts of motor vehicles and 144 cases of theft under $5,000. All three of those categories are experiencing their highest totals in the past five years.

The most popular vehicle for criminals to target have been trucks, SUV’s or vans, with 34 out of the 44 theft of motor vehicle cases falling into that category. Theft from a motor vehicle also makes up a large chunk of the theft under $5,000 cases, with 64 reported incidents.
