Clearwater County sets its municipal tax rates for 2018

May 10, 2018 | 8:18 PM

As approved by council on Tuesday, the residential tax rate will increase by three percent while the non-residential, farmland, machinery and equipment rates are going up by six percent.

Reeve John Vandermeer said Council has anticipated these increases for some time.

“During Council’s budget discussions in December, we carefully evaluated County priorities to plan for several capital infrastructure projects, while also considering the additional needs associated with community growth and maintaining existing service levels.”

When changes to provincial education levies and assessment values are taken into account, Vandermeer says residential properties should actually see a decrease in their tax bills.

“We’ve experienced assessment base shrinkage in previous years and due to our reserve management strategy, Council has historically been able to keep taxes at a steady rate,” Vandermeer noted. “With increased paving maintenance costs along with new projects on the horizon, Council intends to keep our industries rolling and tax rates reflect planning for the future.”

2018 Combined Assessment and Tax Notices will be sent out by the end of May. All taxes are due upon receipt of tax notices, and penalties will apply if not paid on or before September 17, 2018.
