NCHL expands to Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Maskwacis

The North Central Senior Hockey League is welcoming three new teams for the 2018-19 season.

At its annual general meeting held Saturday, the Senior AA circuit approved expansion franchises for Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and Maskwacis.

The league is also welcoming back Rocky Mountain House following a one year leave of absence.

“It’s pretty exciting news,” said league president Jerry Muise. “Eleven is, I believe, the most teams we’ve ever had. And this is also our 25th season in operation, so the timing is great.”

Devon, Morinville, Westlock and Whitecourt will also be back to play in the NCHL next season.

“I’m bragging a bit by saying it’s the best double-A league in the province,” Muise added. “This year in playoffs, our semi-finals went the maximum five games and our final series went the maximum five games. So there are four teams that any one of them could’ve won the league. We had Eckville finish first in the regular season, Daysland win the playoffs and Bonnyville win provincials.”

The league will divide into a north and south division for 2018-19 with the winners to battle for the league championship.
