SUVs surpass pickups as Alberta’s most popular vehicles

May 8, 2018 | 9:02 AM

Sport utility vehicles passed pickup trucks as the most popular type of vehicle purchased in Alberta last year.

That’s according to a report from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

In 2017, over 98-thousand SUVs were sold, accounting for just over 40 per cent of total new vehicle sales.

Almost half of those vehicles were crossovers, which are larger than a car but smaller than a traditional SUV.

For many years, large and small pickup trucks reigned supreme in Alberta but last year they only made up 35 per cent of the market.

ATB Financial broke down the findings and reports total new light vehicle sales in Alberta topped 244,300 units last year.

That’s an increase of 11 per cent over 2016, further supporting the notion that consumer confidence in our province is improving.

Still, it remains almost nine per cent below the record of 268,419 units in 2014.
