County of Stettler the latest to issue Fire Ban

May 7, 2018 | 2:11 PM

Persistent dry and windy conditions throughout central Alberta has led the County of Stettler to be the latest to issue a Fire Ban effective immediately.

Officials say the Fire Ban prohibits the issuance of fire permits by County of Stettler Fire Guardians, suspends all outstanding fire permits issued under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and requires all outdoor fires presently burning to be extinguished immediately.

This includes all open fires, camp fires, fires used for cooking, briquette barbecues, burning barrels, chimneys, briquette / propane fire pits, portable fire pits including those contained in designated fire facilities and the discharge of all fireworks.

The ban does not apply to fires contained in cooking appliances fueled by propane or natural gas such as BBQ’s or Coleman stoves.

According to Regional Fire Chief Mark Dennis, a person who sets a fire not allowed under this ban will be responsible for the costs of extinguishing the fire pursuant to the County of Stettler Bylaw 1561-16 and may be charged under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act.

Other central Alberta communities currently under a Fire Ban include Halkirk, Kneehill County, Mountain View County, Red Deer County, Summer Village of Rochon Sands and Town of Castor.

Those under a Fire Advisory include Brazeau County, Clearwater County, Drayton Valley, Lacombe County, Ponoka County, Rocky Forest Area, Rocky View County, Summer Village of Burnstick Lake, Summer Village of Parkland Beach, Town of Ponoka, Town of Rimbey, Town of Rocky Mountain House and Village of Caroline.
