Mother’s Day Tea and Luncheon to support children’s education efforts in Somalia

May 4, 2018 | 5:06 PM

Helping educate children in Somalia is the goal behind the 3rd Annual Mother’s Day Tea Party and Luncheon taking place in Red Deer May 5.

The event will be held at the Radisson Hotel from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. and will include multi-cultural entertainment and fun activities the whole family can enjoy.

In addition, there will be door prizes, an international fashion show, silent auction, professional family portraits, henna, lunch and much more.

Event organizer Zainab Mohamoud says they’re hoping to raise roughly $10,000 for the Education for Somali Girls and Boys Fund with the money largely being used this year to hire two more teachers and a residence / shelter.

Growing up in war-torn Somalia, Mohamoud says she knows first-hand how important education is for children.

“I had an opportunity to come to Canada and receive my high school,” explains Mohamoud. “I did my social work and now I’m actually doing my degree at RDC.”

Mohamoud adds she really appreciates the support the community shows for this event each year, saying, “We want the kids to be able to have no barrier so they can better their lives and go to school.”

According to Mohamoud, attendees can also consider sponsoring an orphan child for just $35 per month and help out with not only their education but also their basic human needs.
