Red Deer set to host WHL Awards and Bantam Draft

The focus of the Western Hockey League will be on Red Deer for the next couple of days.

The 2018 WHL Awards Luncheon takes place Wednesday afternoon at the Sheraton.

Forward Jayden Halbgewachs of the Moose Jaw Warriors and goaltender Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips are up for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy given to the WHL Player of the Year.

Hart is up against Logan Flodell of the Lethbridge Hurricanes for WHL Goaltender of the Year.

Kale Clague of the Moose Jaw Warriors and Cal Foote of the Kelowna Rockets are finalists for Defenceman of the Year.

Dylan Cozens of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Bowen Byram of the Vancouver Giants are up for Rookie of the Year.

The WHL Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year will be given to either Aleksi Heponiemi  of the Swift Current Broncos or Cody Glass from the Portland Winterhawks.

The WHL Executive of the Year will be decided between Moose Jaw GM Alan Miller and Everett GM Garry Davidson.

And the WHL Coach of the Year award will be given to either Swift Current’s Manny Viveiros or Everett’s Dennis Williams.

Awards for the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year, WHL Humanitarian of the Year, WHL Top Official and the WHL Business Award will also be handed out on Wednesday.

Then on Thursday, also at the Sheraton, the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft takes place. The Edmonton Oil Kings own the first overall selection followed by the Kootenay Ice, who won the Bantam Draft Lottery on March 21, the Prince Albert Raiders (via Prince George), Calgary Hitmen and Kamloops Blazers.

The Red Deer Rebels own two first round selections at seventh overall (their own) and 16th overall (via Regina). The Rebels own five picks in the first three rounds of the draft.

The 2018 Rogers WHL Championship Series for the Ed Chynoweth Cup between the Swift Current Broncos and Everett Silvertips begins Friday night in Swift Current.

Swift Current claimed their fourth Eastern Conference title and first since 1993 with a six-game victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Everett captured their second Western Conference championship and first since 2004 following a 4-2 series victory over the Tri-City Americans.
