Fire destroys farmyard shop east of Lousana

Apr 30, 2018 | 1:40 PM

Thankfully no one was injured after a shop fire at a rural property east of Lousana in Red Deer County Friday afternoon.

The call came in shortly after 2:00 p.m. with crews from Red Deer County responding and finding a wooden structure with a tin roof on Range Road 230 fully engulfed in flames.

District Fire Chief Tom Metzger says the shop on the farm yard was essentially burnt to the ground by the time they arrived.

“Nobody was home at the time of the fire and that’s why it was so far gone by the time we even got a call,” explains Metzger. “It was a normal structure fire that we handled. The only thing different is with the little bit of dry conditions we have going on now, we had to be a little concerned about the grass fire that was involved with it but  we knocked that down rather quickly so it didn’t involve anything else.”

In terms of what caused the fire or where it started, Metzger says it was accidental but he was unable to elaborate any further at this time.

Metzger says firefighters from the Red Deer District and Delburne came out to fight the blaze for nearly two and a half hours.

“Elnora was originally called to help out too but we had to re-route them to another grass fire,” Metzger continued. “Delburne was initially just arriving on scene and I ended up having to re-route them to an outside fire just west of Elnora.”

Metzger says it’s important to note at this time that conditions are dry so be super careful with your outside activities.

“It’s springtime and we don’t have stuff greened up yet,” states Metzger. “Whether it be burning or welding, grinding, working on different equipment, just be awful careful to their surroundings and where they’re doing it at.”

Metzger says no damage estimate is available at this time.
