Three dead after truck, motorcycle crash near Maskwacis

Apr 27, 2018 | 11:48 AM

Three people have died following a truck versus motorcycle collision in central Alberta.

Maskwacis RCMP say the crash happened Thursday night around 10:30 at Highway 2A and Highway 611 West — just one kilometre north of town.

Early investigaton suggests a pickup truck travelling northbound on Hwy 2A attempted a turn onto Hwy 611 and crashed with the southbound motorcycle. The driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown from it, while the driver and passenger of the truck exited and attempted to provide medical assistance.

A third vehicle — an SUV — travelling southbound on Hwy 2A then crashed into the initial collision.

The 51-year-old male driver and 47-year-old female passenger on the motorcycle, as well as the 47-year-old female passenger from the truck, succumbed to their injuries on scene. All were from Maskwacis.

The truck driver and the three passengers in the SUV were unharmed and the scene is now clear.

“A tragic collision of this nature hits the Maskwacis community hard,” says Staff Sergeant Simon McDermott.  “Our condolences to all the families affected by this terrible incident.  The RCMP and their Victim Services Units from both Maskwacis and Wetaskiwin, as well as the Urgent Mental Health Unit will work to provide whatever support community members may seek to get through this.”

RCMP say the investigation continues.
