County tax bylaw given first reading, tabled for public input

Apr 24, 2018 | 1:28 PM

Red Deer County council has given first reading to the 2018 Tax Bylaw.

Under the proposed bylaw, residential municipal taxes will see an increase of $20 per $100,000 of assessed value. Non-residential taxes will see an increase of $120 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Non-residential taxes are those calculated on commercial, industrial, machinery and equipment, as well as linear sectors.

Environmental and Protective Services levies will remain unchanged from 2017, while the Community Services levy will rise from 0.4000 to 0.6000. County officials say this increase is directly related to new recreation funding agreements with neighbouring municipalities.

County Manager Curtis Herzberg says the county is in a strong financial position despite a very aggressive capital spending campaign in recent years.

“We are also ensuring that residential taxes do not see an increase beyond the change in the community services levy,” he adds.

Overall, Red Deer County’s budget is pegged at $87 million for 2018, up from $74 million last year. Approximately $47 of the county budget comes from taxation.

Council will give second and third reading to the 2018 Tax Bylaw at their meeting on May 8. Ratepayers have until May 7 to submit their feedback.
