Overland flood alert issued for Red Deer County

Apr 23, 2018 | 1:56 PM

An Overland Flood Alert has been issued for Red Deer County.

The alert issued Monday afternoon means residents of Red Deer County are being asked to avoid areas of localized flooding caused from a rapid snow-melt and spring run-off.

The flooded areas have also resulted in a number of road closures throughout the County, so drivers are reminded to obey the closures and not bypass or move them.

Officials say motorists should also refrain from travelling on roads covered by water as they may have unforeseen hazards and avoid rivers, valleys and low lying areas.

County staff are now in the field evaluating conditions and determining operational requirements.

Dave Brand, Director of Community and Protective Services for Red Deer County says Alberta Environment also issued a Flood Watch for the Little Red Deer River and Medicine River in the western portions of Red Deer County and Three Hills Creek in the eastern portion where localized flooding is occuring in those areas.

“There’s localized flooding both in the western portion and in the eastern portion,” says Brand. “Particularly in the west  as the snow continues to melt we expect to see more flooding and more overland flow coming from that snow melt with the warmer weather we’re forecast to get this week.”

Brand encourages residents who spot any damage to roads or bridges throughout the County that are not currently marked to notify them.

“If somebody does feel that they are isolated or at-risk of being isolated, we encourage them to contact us, Energency Services,” states Brand. “We can get out there and attend to them in that manner but our operations crews are taking a look at all these roads and at this point in time, it seems to be overflow if you will. It’s overflowing over the top of the roads.”

Road Closures throughout the County currently include:

Rge Rd 233 between Twp Rd 382 & Twp Rd 384, Rge Rd 223 between Twp Rd 360 & Hwy 590, Rge Rd 271 South of Twp Rd 374, Rge Rd 225 between Twp Rd 372 & Twp Rd 374, and Rge Rd 250 between Twp Rd 352 & Hwy 590 closed.

Rge Rd 263 between Twp Rd 372 & Twp Rd 374 closed until further notice due to flooding.

Rge Rd 32 between Hwy 54 & Twp Rd 360 closed until further notice due to flooding.

Rge Rd 21 between Hwy 11A & Half Moon Bay Drive North closed until further notice due to flooding.

Residents should call Red Deer County Centre at 403-350-2150 if your home is impacted by flooding or if you find an unmarked hazard.

Road closure locations and further updates are being posted at www.rdcounty.ca as they become available.

The County will also post notifications on Twitter as they become available.
