High water levels have forced the closure of the north road out of the town of Blackfalds.

Range Road 272 (Broadway Avenue) is closed from Aspen Lakes Blvd. at the town's north end to Township Road 40-0.

Preston Weran, Director of Infrastructure and Property says the freeze and thaw cycle has resulted in melting snow saturating the soil so much that a sinkhole has formed in the road.

"If the weather co-operates, it'll dry out in the next three to five days," he says. "We'll go in and do the road repair and hopefully open it up to traffic probably within a period of 10 days to two weeks."

Weran says unfortunately this happens almost every year along this road because there is no underground infrastructure, something he notes there are long term plans for.

There are three acreages along this stretch of road, the residents of which Weran says can still access their homes because their accesses are before the sinkhole.

For now, motorists will need to use Highway 2A as a detour.
