Council keeping close eye on cannabis regulations elsewhere

Apr 4, 2018 | 3:27 PM

Red Deer city council is keeping close tabs on how other municipalities across the province are dealing with the impending legalization of recreational cannabis.

In Calgary, a city council committee is recommending a policy that would largely ban anyone from lighting up cannabis anywhere but in their own homes. The recommendation is expected to be debated by Calgary city council later this week.

Currently, Red Deer’s Smoke-Free Bylaw identifies where substances of any kind, including e-cigarettes, can be smoked. The bylaw would also apply to recreational cannabis once it becomes legal.

“If city council opts to take a more rigorous approach on the regulatory side of use in public, those amendments would be an option for council through bylaw,” says Mayor Tara Veer. “But that would need to come forward in the future, separate from the [current] land use discussion.”
