Year in jail for driver who rammed police cruiser

A local man charged with ramming a police cruiser during a pursuit in Red Deer last September will spend a year behind bars.

James Metzger pleaded guilty to a count of obstructing/resisting a peace officer in Red Deer Provincial Court in January. Last week, the 32-year-old was sentenced in Red Deer Provincial Court to 365 days in jail, minus credit for 162 days already spent in custody, leaving him 203 days left to serve. Metzger was also fined $600, given 18 months’ probation and a three-year-driver’s license suspension upon his release.

At around 2:00 a.m. on Sept. 22, 2017, City Mounties conducted a traffic stop on 40 Avenue north of Township Road 375 in Red Deer. Police say the truck stopped initially but then reversed and rammed the cruiser, turning it 180 degrees and pushing it towards a ditch.

The collision caused the cruiser’s air bags to deploy, resulting in minor injuries to the officer. The officer however did manage to get out of the cruiser while it was being rammed and before possibly overturning into the ditch. EMS treated the officer at the scene. The truck involved in the crash was found abandoned a short time later.
