Mar 17, 2018 | 4:25 PM

Thousands of central Albertans are taking in the 12th Annual Red Deer Collector Car Auction and Speed Show at Red Deer’s Westerner Park this weekend.

The three-day event running March 16 – 18 at the Parkland and Prairie Pavilions is featuring over 200 collector cars, trucks, boats and motorcycles for auction, along with several exhibitors selling a large amount of sports memorabilia to visitors.

In addition to the vehicle auctions, the event is also featuring public appearances and autograph signings from celebrities such as Actress Catherine Bach, best known as Daisy Duke on the Dukes of Hazard T.V. show. Also Dan and Laura Dotson from the TV series Storage Wars, Kevin Mack from the TV series Counting Cars and Brett ‘Big Schwag’ Wagner from Pass Time and Sons of Anarchy.

The Jackpot Casino Unreserved Memorabilia Auction at 11:00 a.m. will highlight Sunday’s slate. Event Organizer Lindsay Payne says almost 95 per cent of it is unreserved, so over 300 items will go to the highest bidder.

“We have probably 12 exhibitors,” explains Payne. “They range from car art to insurance for classic cars. Adrenaline Motors which is showcasing some of their vehicles, there’s all kinds of things for everybody, there’s some jewellery too for the ladies, so we’ve kind of covered a bit of everything.”

Payne is also happy how the show has grown over the years.

“It’s gone from usually having 75-80 cars and we’re upwards of 200 cars now in any given show,” states Payne. “It’s changed a lot, the number of people through the door, we’re expecting probably thousands this weekend. We’ve added the celebrities, we have more cars, it’s evolved, it’s becoming a pretty big deal!”

In fact, Payne speculates the crowds this weekend could be the biggest they’ve seen so far, citing great demand for a show like this.

“Everybodys always wanting to sell their classic cars,” says Payne. “Even with the snow, people love to come out and showcase their special rides. There’s a big demand for it, it’s a great little field.”
