One injured in avalanche near Nordegg

One person has been buried in an avalanche near Nordegg, according to emergency officials.

On Saturday just after 12 p.m., Rocky Mountain House RCMP received an SOS signal from a GPS device at a location approximately 140km west of town, in the back country of Clearwater County.

It was determined the signal was coming from a person who was ice climbing.

Rocky RCMP had an officer in the area who responded. Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue – Mountain Rescue Team was also deployed along with Ahlstrom Helicopters for air support.

The injured male, along with his three climbing partners, managed to walk off the mountain to the roadway.

It was then learned that an avalanche had occurred while the four climbers were climbing an ice wall. 

The injured climber was treated on scene by EMS from Nordegg. He was then transferred by STARS to Edmonton with non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP would like to remind the public about the natural hazards in the back country at this time of year.
